Entrancing, with a weighty depth held quietly within, the leather is black horse culatta, taken from the hindquarters.
The upper is cut as a single piece running from the vamp to the heel, with a slit on the inner side leading into the laces.
At first glance the opening may look narrow, but thanks to the height of the instep and the finely judged curve of the heel, your foot slips in smoothly.

 

This is a model we have reordered more times than we can count.
At EMATYTE, the designer himself does everything, from storing the leather to cutting, stitching and shaping.
That they are said to “hug the heel” and “hold the instep” is a testament to his ever-honed skill and a sensibility that converses with the leather.

  　　

In terms of construction, this shoe is Goodyear-welted, with a welt stitched in between the sole and the upper.
Normally the stitching shows on the outside, but here the leather is lasted as far inward as possible, so no thread is visible along the sole edge.
With a certain elegance as well, it is a pleasure to wear for any occasion.

 

The awl marks left by the designer on the upper, right along the sole, are proof of true handcraftsmanship.
The calf leather sole, said to be hard and resistant to wear, is secured with wooden pegs, a step that calls for great care.

The other pair is likewise horse culatta from the hindquarters, this time in brown reverse leather, with the grain buffed away and the flesh side turned out.

Because the leather has been rested with plenty of oil absorbed inside, it grows stronger the more you wear it, taking on a soft, muted sheen here and there.
